The Federal Music Industry Association of Germany (Bundesverband Musikindustrie, BVMI) has recently released the primary industry figures for 2015 – and it looks promising.

BMVI reports that music sales in Germany exceed 1.5 billion euro, for the first time since 2009. This means Germany maintains its position as the third biggest music market in the world, after the US and Japan. The growth is largely due to an increase in streaming, while physical is still the major format for selling music.

The value of music sales in Germany increased by 3.9% compared to 2014, and streaming seems to be the biggest driver. Streaming increased by 96.6% and now stands for roughly 30% of the music sales in Germany. Out of that share, 13.8% derives from subscriptions to streaming services.

However, the most popular platform for buying music is still physical – 61.2% of all purchased music is bought on CD. Together with vinyl, DVD/Blu-Rays and other formats, the physical market share makes out 69.1%, a decrease from 2014’s 74%.

Managing Director of BMVI, Florian Drücke, comes with a good point regarding which formats to emphasize in Germany: ”2015 confirms that Germans are across-the-board users; that is, they take advantage of all possible usages: In addition to streaming, vinyl continues to grow significantly, while CDs remain at a considerable 61.2 percent of portion sales”.
