Once again this year, we are inviting several key international industry professionals to attend SPOT Festival. All of them will be joining us at the MXD Superball @ RADAR as part of the SPOT+ programme, but until the festival kicks off on May 4th, we will be bringing you brief introductions to them, including where they come from, what companies they work for, what bands they want to check out at Spot, and much more. We look forward to seeing Julie Mehlum of Nick and Nora Records.

Name: Julie Mehlum

Company: Nick and Nora Records

Title: Co-founder

Based in: Berlin

Can you tell us a bit about the company’s history and roster?
Nick and Nora Records was founded in 2014. We have a thing for music recorded live and with “analogue” instruments, as well as a hang up on good lyrics. Let’s say we’re part of the small yet existing counter reaction to the electronic sound aesthetics that have been dominating pop music the last years.

– and a bit about the acts you personally work with at this moment?
So far we have only released one band; Apples In Space. But at the moment we’re working on expanding and have new releases from other exciting bands coming up.

When was the moment you decided you wanted to work with music?
I started writing songs and playing in a punk band as a teenager and have been part of other projects ever since. The moment I got a foot in the music industry door, I wanted to be a part of every aspect of it; from writing my own songs to releasing other bands.

What are your favorite Danish acts, or alternatively, who are you looking forward to seeing at Spot Festival this year?
My absolute favourite Danish act is Mew. They were my heroes when I was a teenager, and I still love their music. However, I am especially excited to see Bellhound choir, Blondage and Nils Bech at SPOT.

Best live show of your life, hands down?
Easy: Bright Eyes at Robert Albert Hall in 2011. But also every Nick Cave show I’ve seen has been amazing. And Prodigy at Roskilde (In 2011, I think?) was a lot of fun too.
