Buma ROCKS 2015

On January 30th, Copenhell freezes over as 6 up and coming Metal bands take the stage at VEGA. Besides witnessing the bands, you’ll get the chance to meet the key Metal industry people, who’ll be attending the networking event prior to the concerts. Over the next weeks, MXD will introduce you to some of the people, whom you’ll get to meet.

Name & company: Mark van Schaick, Buma ROCKS!

Tell us about your work: As a music journalist in the Netherlands, I have been writing about rock and metal for almost thirty years. I got involved with Buma ROCKS!, when the event debuted in 2013. An initiative of Buma Cultuur, a non-profit organization that supports and promotes Dutch music, Buma ROCKS! directs itself specifically towards promoting heavy rock music and metal in the Netherlands and abroad.

The event consists of a conference, a networking dinner and a showcase stage, where talented bands perform for bookers, agents, labels and general heavy music fans. Buma ROCKS! traditionally takes place in June, and is connected to the FortaRock festival in Nijmegen. A warm-up meeting is held during Eurosonic Noorderslag in Groningen in January. I write all website and marketing texts, and I am co-responsible for programming the panels.

What bands do you work with? Talented and ambitious Dutch acts in hardrock, metal and punk.

Do you work with any Danish artists? Buma ROCKS! has an exchange deal with When Copenhell Freezes Over, which is going great! Redwood Hill and Night Fever played our showcase night in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Paceshifters was in Copenhagen one year ago and now Mandrake’s Monster will come over to play this year’s When Copenhell Freezes Over.

Who plays the meanest Metal shows these days? I will limit myself to Dutch acts, and must say that I am looking forward to the new Textures gigs in February, following the release of their fifth album. Though more punk rock than metal, for sheer energy John Coffey are unbeatable at the moment, but at Eurosonic Noorderslag last weekend I have also tremendously enjoyed the 70’s hardrock approach of Mandrake’s Monster, the metalcore of The Charm The Fury and the protopunktrip of Death Alley. Check them out!
