Once again this year, we are inviting several key international industry professionals to attend SPOT Festival. All of them will be joining us at the MXD Superball @ RADAR as part of the SPOT+ programme, but until the festival kicks off on May 4th, we will be bringing you brief introductions to them, including where they come from, what companies they work for, what bands they want to check out at Spot, and much more. We look forward to seeing Daniel Koch of INTRO Magazine.

Name: Daniel Koch

Media: INTRO magazine

Title: Editor in Chief

Based in: Cologne and Berlin

Can you tell us a bit about your INTRO’s history?
INTRO celebrated it’s 25th birthday some weeks ago and is one of the biggest pop culture magazines in Germany. We are a free magazine and you find us in bars, clubs, record and fashion stores all over Germany.

– and a bit about what Intro has been up to this year?
From December 2016 to April 2017, we concentrated on our anniversary and had big parties in Cologne and Berlin with bands like Drangsal, Wanda and Soulwax as headliners. Besides that we made an extra packed issue where we looked at 25 years of music journalism and visited the record store guy from „Shock Records” who booked the first ad in our first issue. With him it’s a bit like with us: His shop is still around, bigger and brighter then back when he started 😉 Last september we did a Denmark special for Reeperbahn Festival and had a focus on art, fashion and music from Denmark with a cover designed by Henrik Vibskov.

When was the moment you personally decided you wanted to work with music?
It must have been when I suddenly had a weekly radio show at a small radio station with Christine, a good friend of mine, while studying. She finished studying a bit earlier and started to work for music tv. I guess she was a good example that it is possible to work with what you love and earn at least a bit of money. We did an interview every week, drove through Germany to interview Maximo Park and Killers on their first Germany tour and realized we might not be too bad at it. But I would never have guessed that I would „end up“ being editor in chief of the magazine that taught me about indie music in my late youth. By the way: Christine is still around as well. The TV show she works for (arte TRACKS) and Intro are media partners and she just released an ace documentary about the Sleaford Mods.

What are your favorite Danish acts and who are you looking forward to seeing at Spot Festival this year?
I always had a soft spot for Mew and the early Ravonettes – they toured Germany a lot and I have seen them quite a few times. And I like the younger bands like the Communions and Sløtface. Both of them bring a new energy to genres that had become a bit lifeless for me. They are playing at SPOT – so you’ll find me there.

Best live show of your life, hands down?
Uh, always a tough one. I can’t put it down to one. One of the best was the release show of The National for their „Boxer“ record in Magnet in Berlin. Then I’d say: Every show I saw at my first Glasonbury in 2002 – even Coldplay were brillant back then.  Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds in Admiralspalast in Berlin when they played „Push The Sky Away“ in its entirety. The one and only time I saw a clubshow of Rilo Kiley in Lido in Berlin, I don’t know when that was.
