DENMARK:
Another Life Community / Rosa Lois Balle Yahiya & Sofie Westh
Another Life is a non-profit organization working against discrimination and towards a more inclusive music industry in Denmark for everyone.
Founded by Rosa Lois Balle Yahiya and Sofie Westh in early 2021, the organization’s work has already made an impact on the Danish industry’s approach and way of working with representation and structural discrimination. Another Life’s goal is to increase and improve equality while voicing and reducing discriminatory behavior with an intersectional approach on a structural level.
Another Life’s first aim was to gather data that examined the various identities in the music industry. This led to the publishing of their first report ‘Representation in the Danish music industry – on and behind the stage 2021’, consisting of both the results of the national survey as well as contributions from sociologists, researchers and people working with music. It mapped representation, but it also showed a high amount of discriminatory behavior that especially women and minorities experience in the industry. The first report gained a lot of publicity in both the Danish music industry and in national media, such as Danmarks Radio, Information and Politiken.
In 2022, Another Life was given the prestigious critics award Steppeulvens Initiativpris 2022 for the importance and impact of the report and for the organization’s role in putting intersectional work on the agenda in the Danish music industry.
Today, Another Life is still expanding both its organization and its project portfolio while working on creating an economically sustainable organization. Beside the reports, the organization offers education about representation, discrimination and intersectionality through talks, festivals, workshops, and consultations that aims to give tools to the people working in the music industry.
Another Life wants to ensure, that everyone working with music in Denmark are more aware about the possibilities to make change and how to create a more inclusive music industry.
