Name: Shannon Kurlander
Company: Terrorbird Media
Title: Head of A&R
Based in: UK / US
Can you tell us a bit about the company’s history and its roster?
Since 2006, Terrorbird has been a place for deeply connected music obsessives to champion the artists they genuinely love. Cutting through the static in an increasingly saturated landscape requires a lot of moving parts. Offering a wide variety of services, Terrorbird’s multifaceted crew contains experts in:
Radio Promotion
Publicity
Digital Advertising
Sync Licensing
Custom Music
Publishing Administration
And can you tell us a bit about the acts you personally work with at this moment?
While every team member and department curates their own roster, I oversee A&R for the entire company, resulting in a rather extensive list. One of the aspects I particularly enjoy about my job is introducing global artists to the United States. Among the international artists I’ve had the pleasure of introducing in some way are Arlo Parks, Hatchie, Squid, Astrid Sonne, The Beths, ML Buch, and Mandy, Indiana – just to name a few!
What was the moment you decided you wanted to work with music?
The seeds were planted early on when I began borrowing my dad’s old records, and they flourished when I gained access to the internet as a teenager. The realization that music could be a viable career path didn’t occur until college when I became involved with our campus radio station. Transitioning from a DJ to Music Director and eventually to General Manager of the station, I became aware of the diverse array of opportunities within the music industry. Radio promotion emerged as my point of entry.
Which acts are you looking forward to seeing this year at SPOT?
Elias Rønnenfelt, Snuggle, Rebebe + many I’ve yet to discover!
Best show you’ve ever seen hands down?
Solange circa 2016 ‘A Seat At The Table’ sundown festival moment.
