In the weeks leading up to SPOT Festival 2025, we’ll be introducing you to the international industry professionals who have been invited to this year’s festival by Danish artists and music companies through MXD’s new invitation pool.
Here, you can meet:
Name: Howard Monk
Company: Knom
Title: Owner/Booker
Based in: UK – London and Hampshire
Can you tell us a bit about the company’s history and its roster?
Knom has been at the sharp end of live music booking and promotion for over 25 years. Starting from booking and promoting founder Howard Monk’s own band Billy Mahonie and other acts from their network, the company would often promote a London show for a US act from the Southern label, and then try to link them up with other shows around the UK when needed. Shows and tours with The National, American Analog Set, 90 Day Men, Les Savvy Fav and many more came out of this link.
Regular shows in London including early shows from Bloc Party, Animal Collective, This is the Kit, John Smith, and hundreds more as The Local/Knom Music as well as presenting shows in New York, Austin TX and Los Angeles.
A side hustle in education grew out of regularly attending conferences and feeling confident speaking to young artists. This has now developed into a main career in education and talent development/coaching new artists and industry.
I promoted Efterklang and Under Byen at the ICA. Played in Bows with Signe Høirup Wille-Jørgensens. Worked with Lasse Mathiassen. Have taken my fair share of chances with Danish acts!
And can you tell us a bit about the acts you personally work with at this moment?
Majke Voss has very much brought me back in from the cold. My own band Billy Mahonie just completed a UK tour.
What was the moment you decided you wanted to work with music?
As a teen.
Which acts are you looking forward to seeing this year at SPOT?
Majke Voss and need to do some research!
Best show you’ve ever seen hands down?
Tortoise, or Jaga Jazzist, or indeed Efterklang and Under Byen
